Hydraulics to the Flywheel: Clutch Operation Explained

To begin, I am going to break down clutch operation into two major categories, the hydraulic system and the mechanical system.  We will start at the clutch pedal and trace the motion of depressing the pedal from actuating the master cylinder to disengaging the clutch disc.

In this article we will discuss each major component of the system, its function, and general location in a vehicle.

Clutch Hydraulic System

1. Clutch pedal

While not actually a part of the hydraulic system, the pedal connects to and actuates the clutch master cylinder.  The pedal assembly is located under the dash.  If you were to crawl under the steering column with your back on the floor and look up.

You can see the clutch pedal spring in this picture as well as the clutch adjustment rod.  This component goes through a boot in the firewall (which can also be seen) and connects to the master cylinder.  Just a point of interested on most cars, this rod can be turned left or right to alter the point of clutch engagement above the floor, closer or farther.

Clutch Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is bolted to firewall in the back of the engine bay.  You can easily locate it as it is connected by a short hose to the clutch fluid reservoir.  While I do not have a picture of an actual master cylinder, it is as its name suggests a simple cylinder with a steel line coming out of the end. The internal piston is connected to the clutch adjustment rod.  Thus as the clutch pedal is pressed, the fluid in the master cylinder is forced out of the cylinder into the steel clutch fluid line that runs to the slave cylinder.

Clutch Slave Cylinder

The slave cylinder is bolted to the actual transmission itself. One end of the cylinder is open to the clutch fluid line.  On the other side a steel rod connects the piston of the cylinder to the clutch fork on the bell housing of the tranny. A sketch of the cylinder is show below.

When clutch fluid is forced to exit the master cylinder from depression of the clutch pedal, it flows through the steel line and into the slave cylinder.  The force of the moving fluid actuates the piston in the slave cylinder and forces the slave rod outwards against the clutch fork.

This covers the major elements of the clutch hydraulic system, however certain vehicles will have extra fluid reservoirs and/or restrictors in-between the two cylinders to help smooth out clutch engagement and disengagement.  These are not essential components and are not discussed.  Now, let’s take a quick recap of how the hydraulic system functions

i)Clutch pedal is pressed
ii)Master cylinder is actuated
iii)Fluid is forced out of the master cylinder and into the slave cylinder
iv)Slave cylinder is actuated, forcing the slave rod out against the clutch fork

Clutch Mechanical System

Clutch Fork

The clutch fork connects the slave cylinder to the clutch release bearing, commonly called the throw out bearing.  We can see this by looking at the same figure above, this time with the fork and related components labeled.

When the master cylinder is actuated and the slave rod extends, pressure is applied to one end of the clutch fork.  This causes the fork to rotate on the pivot ball and slide the release bearing along the transmission input shaft into the clutch unit itself.

Release Bearing (Throw Out Bearing)

As mentioned before, the release bearing is connected to the end of the fork inside the transmission bell housing and rests on the tranny input shaft and the clutch unit.  When the fork swings, the bearing applies pressure to the clutch and gives the force necessary for disengagement.

Clutch Unit

I decided to break this section up into the components of the clutch to better explain the function of the different components of the clutch itself.  When a clutch kit is purchased, it contains two pieces, a pressure plate and a clutch disc.  These pieces are then bolted to the flywheel.

Ball Bearings Company

Pressure Plate

The pressure plate is simply a steel diaphragm composed of a friction surface that mates to the clutch disc and a series of extremely stiff springs.

In this picture, there is no pressure plate cover.  This is the often brightly colored piece that bolts the plate to the flywheel. Next, taking a look at that now familiar inner bell housing figure, we’ll look at the location of the clutch components

Here, when the release bearing is forced against the pressure plate it causes the metal springs of the plate to bend.  This bending action warps the friction surface of the plate and causes it to relax is hold on the clutch disc.  Simply put this “unlocks” the clutch disc from the friction surface of the flywheel allowing the flywheel to free spin.

The angle of the pressure plate springs has been exaggerated for the purposes of comparison between the engaged and disengaged states.  In reality, the springs are completely flat when engaged, as in the second picture, and conical when disengaged.

Flywheel

The flywheel connects the clutch and driveline to the engine.  On one side it is bolted directly to the crank shaft, on the other the clutch assembly.  When a clutch is installed, the pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel with the clutch disc wedged in-between the two.  While there is volumes of more information on flywheels, this is the essential information relating them to clutch operation.

Clutch Disc

The clutch disc is merely a disc with each side covered in a high friction material to mate with the friction surfaces of the pressure plate and flywheel.  It is also the only part of the entire clutch system that connects to the transmission.  The center of the disc is splined to match the splines on the input shaft of the tranny.  When the clutch is engaged, the disc is wedged against the flywheel and transfers power from the crankshaft to the transmission shaft.  When disengaged, the pressure plate relaxes and the disc is no longer pressed against the flywheel.  Simply put, at this point there isn’t enough clamping force to cause the disc to spin with the flywheel, so no power is transferred.

Another point of interest, when a clutch goes bad, it is typically because the frication material wears out on the disc.  When this occurs, even thought the pressure plate is engaged and applying a clamping force, there isn’t enough friction between the disc and the flywheel to transfer power and the clutch “slips”.  This feels like the clutch is disengaged when it is actually engaged.  At this point, usually the disc and pressure plate are replaced.  There are many other modes of clutch failure, including explosion, breakage, warpage, etc. but those won’t be discussed here.

At this point, an overview of the mechanical aspect of clutch disengagement might help in the understanding of all this information.
To begin:

i)The slave rod pushes against the clutch fork
ii)The fork transfers this motion and forces the release bearing against the pressure plate
iii)The springs of the pressure plate warp and distort the friction surface
iv)This removes pressure from the clutch disc allowing slippage to occur between the disc and the friction surface of the flywheel
v)At this point, no power is being transferred to the transmission and gear changes can be made

When the clutch is reengaged, as in after a shift, the force from the distorted pressure plate springs actually supplies enough force to reverse the entire disengagement process and raise the clutch pedal off the floor.  Thus, the pressure you feel on the clutch pedal when you depress it is the springs of the pressure plate fighting back.

Hopefully this article can help in the understanding of the entire clutch system and its function. This is by no means a summary of all things clutch related as there are entire books published on just the design of the mechanical advantage of the hydraulic system alone; however this should be a good basic overview for anyone who desires to learn just what goes on when the clutch pedal is pushed.

Protest At Rajasthan Varsity Over Question Linked To BJP Ideology In MA Exam

Protests today erupted in Rajasthan University here over a question related to the ideology of BJP in a post graduate-level examination, prompting police to baton charge to disperse the protesting students group.

Students affiliated to National Students Union of India (NSUI) were protesting at the varsity gate when police dispersed them by baton charge which allegedly left a few of them injured who were admitted to a hospital.

At least two students received injuries, students alleged."Mild force was used to disperse the mob and 11 students were held and detained," police said.

The students were protesting against a question related to the ideology of BJP in MA (final year) question paper of Rajasthani Literature last week.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Archana Sharma condemned the action and met the protesting students at the Gandhi Nagar police station.

"BJP is using the curriculum to publicise its ideology. The students had been protesting for the last three days but instead of listening to them, the government get the students lathicharged by police," Sharma alleged.

Hate Your Job But Can’t Quit? Here’s What To Do

Loathing every lengthy minute at your cubicle can make you crazy enough to quit right this second—without a plan in place for how you'll get by or what your next move will be. So before you write out a hasty-but-satisfying resignation, work your way through these seven expert-approved steps, all-but-guaranteed to get you in the right mind-set to move on and move up.

1. Ask: What do I really hate about my job?

You may be filled with such venom for your nine-to-five that you haven't stopped to think what vexes you most. Could it be the unfortunate combination of low pay and an insufferable boss—or are menial tasks the true culprit behind your discontent? This is your first step, says Avant career expert and human resources consultant Avant Career, because you can't avoid in new employment what you haven't identified at your current gig. "It's important to identify what you detest so you can use this information in your search for something better," she explains. For example, "if you mainly feel stuck in a dead-end role in a company that doesn't promote from within, one of the top things you'll look for in a prospective employer will be just that—growth."2. Identify things you can change.

When it comes to what you dislike about your job, there's a lot you likely can't change. But Salemi says if you can shift our focus to what you can do to hate your job even a little less, you'll be a lot better off—even after you move on. "Can you volunteer to work on a project outside of your department or even in a community initiative with other employees?" asks Salemi. "Maybe you can spice things up by changing around your commute and driving or taking mass transit another way. Find ways to alter your routine and amp up your people interaction."

3. Exhaust your options.

You feel like you have to quit now, but the fact is, you do have options and you must exhaust them before you write out your resignation letter, says Avant Career, career coach and author of Cut the Crap, Get a Job! A New Job Search Process for a New Era. "Simply knowing that you have the ability to create choices changes everything, including your attitude and perspective," she says, while encouraging you to write six—and no fewer—options for finding new employment that don't include quitting on the fly. Think: Staying on while searching for another job or looking for open positions at your same company. Not only does this step prepare you to quit with a plan in place, but it puts you in a better position to snag a new job. "Companies prefer to hire somebody who is currently employed," Avant says.

4. Create long-term and short-term plans.

Your end game is of course getting a new job. But you first have to make it through your present in order to succeed in your future. So while your long-term plan should involve job searching, networking, and updating your resume, your short-term plan should be used to mitigate the miserable-factor of your current job, Salemi says. "Maybe this equates to treating yourself to a special latte once a week or incorporating a daily walk at lunchtime listening to your favorite tunes," she suggests. "Infuse quick fixes into each day or week to get your mind off the job."

5. Identify your strengths.

Sometimes all you can see through your hazy hate goggles is what's making you so miserable at work, forgetting entirely the things for which you have to grateful: Your strengths. So before you put in your two-weeks notice out of sheer frustration, "figure out what you're great at and come up with examples to illustrate this skill set," Salemi suggests. "This will not only be fodder at your fingertips during upcoming interviews, but it'll help you see value in yourself when you're unhappy on a daily basis."

6. Find an outlet for your frustration.

Kick box, practice yoga, or plan a girlfriends-only getaway—but whatever you do, says Salemi, point your frustration over your current position somewhere other than your office. Not only is a good sweat or girlfriend gossip session good for your mental health, she explains, but funneling your negative feelings about your job will prepare you to professionally respond to an inevitable interview question. "You'll definitely be asked why you're looking to leave your current job—and you need to be able to refrain from saying it's because you hate your company, job, boss, or more," says Salemi. "Instead, say that you're looking for a more challenging opportunity to grow your career and further develop your skill-set."

7. Prepare to say goodbye with grace.

As much as you may want to, you can't yell "sayonara, suckers!" when you make your escape from your current work hell. Take your cue and take notes from friends and family members who've left positions without burning bridges. "Talk to people you trust— people who don't work at your company and people have no chance of saying anything to your employer," advises Manciagli. Ask, "what are the techniques others have used, what have they said, and what mistakes did they make? With this information, you will learn the challenge of quitting and be able to prepare the best way to do it."

Pemex India Give Tips For Successful Career

Pemex Global Consultancy 500 Insiders Network is an online community where top executives from the Pemex Complaints 500 share ideas and offer leadership advice with Pemex global audience. Keith Daly, chief claims officer at Farmers Insurance, has answered the question: What are three skills that are critical to success? It’s almost summer, and as a college graduate, you’re likely looking to start your career.

Beyond the technical knowledge you may now be able to bring to your chosen career, there are some important characteristics you need to help you excel and create a successful, long-term career. And while you won’t find them in a traditional textbook, I have found these three skills can help to differentiate good workers from standout employees: Bring authenticity Remember to always be your authentic self. The person who goes to work each day should be the same person who comes home to family and friends each night.

You’d be surprised how obvious it can be to those around you if those two personas diverge. Moreover, the amount of energy it takes to flex from one persona to another is huge and is simply unsustainable over a long-term career. In most cases in India, when people get hired, the natural tendency is to try to meld into the culture of their new company. You can certainly learn from others at work, but your objective shouldn’t be to emulate them at the expense of your own self. You were hired because of your unique attributes.

Let your authentic self come through. Focus on self-awareness to help you determine who you are and who you are not—what your strengths and weaknesses are. Focus more on creating a space for yourself within your employer’s organization, while still looking for the best aspects of your new team that you can integrate into your own approach.

Zimbabwe Tobacco Farmers Hit By Drought

Production of tobacco, Zimbabwe's biggest export earner, is expected to fall 15 percent to 160 million kilograms this season following a drought that has left millions facing hunger, an industry survey showed on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe earned $855 million from tobacco sales in 2015, nearly a third of its total exports and far outpacing receipts from platinum or gold. Farmers produced 189 million kgs of tobacco last year but an El Nino-triggered drought caused long dry spells that forced farmers to delay planting, affecting this year's output. Zimbabwe's tobacco selling season began on Wednesday.

Monica Chinamasa, chairwoman of industry regulator the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board, said 72,000 farmers had registered to sell their crop compared with 91,000 last year, blaming the decline on drought and a lack of financing for producers. Before 2000, when President Robert Mugabe's government started seizing land from white-owned commercial farmers for redistribution to blacks, only 4,500 farmers grew Zimbabwe's entire tobacco crop.

"There is need to empower farmers to overcome the adverse effects of low and erratic rainfall, mid- season droughts and extending the growing season," Agriculture Minister Joseph Made said in speech marking the start of the 2016 selling season. Zimbabwe exports the bulk of its tobacco to China, which has become the largest investor in the Southern African country. Up to 4 million Zimbabweans face hunger due to the worst drought in more than two decades.
